Obesity is Rising

Part 1: Knowing more and more about less and less.

Take a quick look at the shocking statistics I have listed below from the NHS National Statistics, published in March 17.

  • In 2015, 58% of women and 68% of men were overweight or obese. Obesity prevalence increased from 15% in 1993 to 27% in 2015.

  • In 2015/16 there were 525,000 admissions in NHS hospitals where obesity was recorded as a factor.

  • In 2015/16, over 1 in 5 children in Reception and over 1 in 3 children in Year 6 were measured as obese or overweight.

It is 2018 and we have more healthcare professionals than in the history of man (e.g. Doctors, nurses, osteopaths, physiotherapists, personal trainers, pharmacists, chiropractors, nutritionists etc). Yet the obesity rates keep on climbing. With so many “specialists” in the areas of health and fitness, are we all missing the point or have we got to the point where we know everything about nothing?

I am not saying that healthcare professionals are wrong to be disciplined in a specialist field, but how many take a step back and see how the human bodies complex system of systems works so synergistically and effortlessly within itself when operating under natures laws. When we keep breaking down different parts of the body and becoming experts in that particular field, as science so often teaches, we find that the body does not function in the same way as when it is whole. As the saying goes “the whole is greater than the “sum of its parts.” I wait for the day all of these experts can work in a more synergistic way that is more understanding of fundamental health principles.

There are so many factors tied to obesity, far too many too mention in one single blog post, however I can firmly say that encouraging everybody to eat “5-a-day” and "X" amount of calories is far off the mark.

Is our obesity epidemic and other associated health problems an expression of our disconnect from the laws of nature?

A passive consumer of western society will always encounter health challenges. Let these challenges be a gift and a wake up call to achieve a higher degree of awareness, health and vitality. On a purely physical level, start paying attention to your own body instead of the latest diet or health fad. What are you doing or not doing that is taking your health away from you?

How many obese people do you think are eating 80/90% high quality organic whole food, exercising their body at the appropriate intensity 30 minutes a day, getting adequate sleep each night, taking time out for rest and introspection and have a clear goal, dream or vision to be their guiding compass?

Remember obesity isn’t something that happens to you over night. Heal yourself to heal the world.
